The time is now to plan your summer fishing trip! Before you know it, we will be enjoying the sun and setting out on the water to fish. The White River has been ranked one of the top places to fish for trout in the country including rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. So before you come to Gaston’s White River Resort for your summer fishing trip, it is important to know what type of fish you will be catching this summer in Lakeview Arkansas.
Sometimes referred to as the “steelhead trout” this freshwater stream rainbow trout is a popular fish in the White River. Adult rainbow trout’s weight averages between 1 and 5 lbs. They can be picked out by their blue-green or olive green with black spotting over their body. Adult fish have a red stripe from the gills to the tail. Lake-dwelling rainbow trout are usually more silvery in color with the red stripe almost entirely gone.
The brown trout is a medium-sized fish, growing up to 44 lbs or more and a length of about 39 inches in some localities, although in many smaller rivers, a mature weight of 2.2 pounds or less is typical. Freshwater brown trout range in color from primarily silver with relatively few spots and a white belly, sometimes mistaken for rainbow trout, to the more familiar brassy brown fading to white on the fish’s belly, with spots surrounded by lighter halos.
Cutthroat trout are popular game fish, especially among anglers who enjoy fly- fishing. The name, cutthroat, refers to the distinctive red coloration on the underside of the jaw. Their color can range from golden to gray to green on the back. Cutthroat trout can be set apart from rainbow trout by the presence of basibranchial teeth at the base of the tongue. Stream fish are much smaller, 0.4 to 3.2 ounces. While lake populations have attained weights ranging from 12 to 17 lbs.
