NO FLOODING CONDITIONS ON THE UPPER WHITE RIVER

April 15th, 2008   3pm

Current Conditions on the White River

 The White River at Gaston’s the Corps is running about nine units, the water is clear. The Corps this afternoon around 12:30pm open all the flood gates about six inches.  The river is about one foot higher than it is at eight units.  Trout fishing has been good. The Bull Shoals dam is holding water back due to the flooding on the lower end of the White River, in the Delta region.

Bull Shoals Lake has surpassed its top flood pool level of 695 feet, according to an Army Corps of Engineers web site.
The 9 a.m. reading showed Bull Shoals at a level of 695.03 feet.

The lake is expected to be at or near its crest, officials have said. Meanwhile, the level on Norfork Lake continues to drop slowly. Norfork's level was 579.09 this morning, down from a record 582.30 last week. The top flood pool at Norfork is 580 feet.

"Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could;
Some blunders and absurdities crept in;
Forget them as soon as you can.

Tomorrow is a new day;
You shall begin it serenely and
With too high a spirit to be encumbered
With your old nonsense."

Arkansas Trophy Trout - Gaston's White River Resort

 Here at Gaston's our hope and prayers go out to the outfitters and residents of the lower end of the White, North Fork and Buffalo Rivers. The abnormally high water caused much damage and we all hope everyone will be okay.

Seagulls were spotted on the lakeside of the dam in hopes of a floating shad. This indication held true for the shad came though in spurts this past week. Fishermen reported seeing shad going down stream, which makes trout fishing exciting.

Big Browns

The biggest trophy trout brown trout caught on shad with 2 units of water generating. These beautiful trophy trout have been caught mostly using frozen shad, smithwick rogues, countdown rapalas, luckycraft, and excalibers. These trout are also being caught on white jigs bouncing off the bottom of the river.

Rainbows

The average rainbow being caught has been between 1 - 2 lbs, using white glowworms during high water condition, and pink glowworms or pink nitroworms on low water. Yellow powerbait has been a must all year long, and now white powerbait is taking some of the thunder. Buoyant spoons have also been a hot lure, as well as live nightcrawlers on low water or redworms on high water.

Fly Fishermen

Hank’s secret: Try drifting a # 10 or # 12 foam ant over those fuss, midge-eating trout, on a long (5 ft.) 4x tippet. It works more often than not and de-complicates that whole “midge frustration…thing.” Lots of low water makes wade fishing great!

Hot Flies by Hank and Frank: y2k, bulbous bivisible #12, WD-40 #18-#20, Wooly buggers, Copper John #14, zebra midge (bead heads) in brown & black #18-#20, the green butt, and soon the hopper will be in season.

Please note that a trophy trout released can be replicated if you have the dimensions and pictures of the fish so that one day someone else can experience a great trophy trout as well.

It is rewarding to see the bait fisherman, fly fisherman, guides, operators and the public working together in the best interest of the White River and it's Trophy Trout fishing program.  Just proves what a bit of teamwork will do.

Good luck with your fishing and take a buddy along to enjoy fishing also
and to make memories of a lifetime.

Ron & Logan

Pointers For Catch-n-Release

Choosing Your Tackle
Use strong line to bring your catch in quickly.
Fish caught with flies or lures survive at a higher rate than fish caught with bait.
Use hooks appropriate to the size of the fish.
Use pliers to pinch barbs on hooks down.

Landing Your Catch
Land your fish as carefully and quickly as possible.
Avoid removing the fish from the water.
Do not let fish flop about in shallow water, on the ground, or in the bottom of your boat.
Use landing nets made with soft or knotless mesh.

Handling Your Catch
Keep your fish in the water.
Cradle large fish gently with both hands: one under its belly, one at the tail.
Keep your fingers out of and away from the gills and eyes.
Use wet hands or wet cloth gloves to handle the fish.

Never squeeze the fish.
Support your fish in the water while your partner takes your picture. Fish can not remain healthy out of water for longer than you can hold your breath.

Removing Your Hook
Use long nose pliers to back the hook out.
Remove the hook quickly, keeping the fish underwater.
When the fish is hooked deeply, cut the line to release the fish. If the fish is bleeding form the gills, it is likely to die and you should keep it as part of your bag limit.
Use steel hooks that will rust out, avoid stainless steel hooks.

Reviving Your Catch
Keep your catch in the water at all times. If you want to take a photograph, have the photographer get ready, then lift the fish barely out of the water (unless prohibited by regulation e.g. king salmon in Cook Inlet) and quickly return it to the water.
Point your catch into a slow current, or gently move it back and forth until its gills are working properly and it maintains its balance. When the fish recovers and attempts to swim away, let it swim from your hands. Large fish may take some time to revive.
