trout fishing is an excellent time to catch the trophy brown trout.

The questions about the
shad kill have been asked and the answer has been not yet until Wednesday,
February 20th. The shade are starting to come through Seagulls are
circling. This is a very good sign for any fisherperson.
The water generation has
been steady during the weekdays and shut down on the weekends. The theory behind
this is because schools and factories are

Recommendations
A lesson from the veteran Hank himself, “Rainbows are
grabbing y2k’s and other egg patterns. All shoals and riffles on the upper white
are hot from wildcat shoals to the state park at Lakeview. A steady midge hatch
provides top water action all day and, later blue-wing olives in the riffles
provide exciting afternoons. Foam ant patterns still producing large fish.”
Wooly buggers are a
great fly to use at this time of the year. They can replicate a sculpin or a
shad. Try using light colors on a sunny day and dark colors on a cloudy day.
During the shad kill, a white wooly bugger with some sparkles should do very
well on high or low water, as well as a floating shad pattern. Y2k’s are working
on low water and the dragging eggs have produced well on high water
Hank’s secret:
Try drifting a # 10 or # 12 foam ant over those fuss, midge-eating trout, on a
long (5 ft.) 4x tippet. It works more often than not and de-complicates that
whole “midge frustration…thing.” Lots of low water makes wade fishing great!
Hot Flies by Hank: y2k,
bulbous bivisble #12, WD-40 #18-#20, Wooly buggers, Copper John #14, zebra midge
(bead heads) in brown & black #18-#20, and the green butt.
Frank recommends white egg patterns, and
white jigs under a strike indicator on heavy water generation, as well as San
Juan worms on high water. On low water conditions, the black, brown or olive
bead head wholly bugger, partridge and orange soft hackle, zebra midge, and the
y2k bug

The y2k or white jig and the white, olive or brown wooly bugger still seem to be
the favorite flies for many people up and down the river. Y2k’s have done very
well catching rainbow trout on low water.

All day long night crawlers seem to do very well. Many guides are reporting very
good catches on shad. White are also very effective. Whenever live bait is used
the chance of hooking a trophy brown trout is very good.
The favorite lures that guides have been using lately have been brown, black,
pink or white jigs on two or more units of water. With the cold weather, some
other lures being used are the # 5 silver or gold floating Rapalas, stick baits,
jerk baits and the smithwick blue-backed rogue. Any minnow shaped lure has
potential such as excalibers and lucky craft. When water is lower (1 unit
generation) the buoyant and Colorado spoon will produce trout as well as the
white or silver rooster tails.
Please note that a trophy trout released
can be replicated if you have the dimensions and pictures of the fish so that
one day someone else can experience a great trophy trout as well.

Fishing the White River is allowed 12 months out of
the year. The months of November through March offer some of the
trophy trout
catches of all seasons, however, fishing is good all year as the water temperature remains
an approximate 50 degrees throughout the year.

Serves 4
Ingredients
4 whole trout
1/2 Lb. medium shrimp, shelled
1/2 Lb. Lump Crabmeat
2 Fresh Rosemary Sprigs
1 Whole Tomato, Seeded and diced
1 whole onion chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 Cup Bread Crumbs
Salt & Pepper to taste
Directions
Clean the trout and
split lengthwise, set aside. Dice onion, cube tomato, and mince garlic. Mix
ingredients with crabmeat and shrimp, set aside.
Sprinkle inside of fish with salt and pepper to taste. Set rosemary sprig inside
fish. Spoon shellfish and vegetable mixture into fish, distributing evenly
between all pieces. Top filling with breadcrumbs. Fish may be sewn shut with
high grade thread to hold it together if necessary.
Place all pieces on the grill and cook 10 minutes per side, or until done. Serve
with boiled parsley potatoes and green vegetable like broccoli or brussel
sprouts.
Recommended wine: a semi-dry Hungarian white wine, like Tokai Furmint.

Catch-n-Release
Choosing Your Tackle
Use strong line to bring your catch in quickly.
Fish caught with flies or lures survive at a higher rate than fish caught with bait.
Use hooks appropriate to the size of the fish.
Use pliers to pinch barbs on hooks down.
Landing Your Catch
Land your fish as carefully and quickly as possible.
Avoid removing the fish from the water.
Do not let fish flop about in shallow water, on the ground, or in the bottom of your boat.
Use landing nets made with soft or knotless mesh.
Handling Your Catch
Keep your fish in the water.
Cradle large fish gently with both hands: one under its belly, one at the tail.
Keep your fingers out of and away from the gills and eyes.
Use wet hands or wet cloth gloves to handle the fish.
Never squeeze the fish.
Support your fish in the water while your partner takes your picture. Fish can not remain healthy out of water for longer than you can hold your breath.
Removing Your Hook
Use long nose pliers to back the hook out.
Remove the hook quickly, keeping the fish underwater.
When the fish is hooked deeply, cut the line to release the fish. If the fish is bleeding form the gills, it is likely to die and you should keep it as part of your bag limit.
Use steel hooks that will rust out, avoid stainless steel hooks.
Reviving Your Catch
Keep your catch in the water at all times. If you want to take a photograph, have the photographer get ready, then lift the fish barely out of the water (unless prohibited by regulation e.g. king salmon in Cook Inlet) and quickly return it to the water.
Point your catch into a slow current, or gently move it back and forth until its gills are working properly and it maintains its balance. When the fish recovers and attempts to swim away, let it swim from your hands.
Large fish may take some time to revive.
