trout fishing is an excellent time to catch the trophy brown trout.

Hank Retires & Frank
Become Instructor.
Hank
Wilson has turned over his fly rod to Frank Saksa as our new fly-fishing
instructor. Hank will still be around recommending flies, and you might even see
him out on the river catching those trophy brown trout. Frank has become one of
the most knowledgeable fly-fishing guides on the White River. Frank has fly
fished on all the major streams in the western part of the U.S. and brings over
20 years of experience that he will share. He also brings techniques to the
river that is sure to catch trout.
January
4th thru January 18th
Trout fishermen on the White River have
seen many different types of water conditions. Anytime between 5 AM – 6 AM
there is 2 – 4 units of water generating through the dam. Around 9 AM – Noon
the dam with shut down and the water will drop. Never fear because the water
coming through the dam will unearth enough food so that when the dam is shut
down the trout will still be feeding.

Recommendations
Not much has changed since the last report in the world of fly-fishing. Both of
these veteran fly-fishermen still agree that the bulbous bivisible on low water
where a creek runs into the river. Hank has also recommends the partridge and
orange soft hackle, gold ribbed hares’ ear, the copper john, the copper zebra
midge, the y2k bug, the sow bug and the draggin’ egg.
Frank recommends using the peach or white
egg patterns, white or pink micro jigs, and san juan worms on high water. On low
water conditions, the black, brown or olive bead head wholly bugger, partridge
and orange soft hackle, zebra midge, and the y2k bug
The best flies for high water conditions
have been the pink or white jigs.
The best for low water favors the
bivisible, copper john, and the copper zebra midge.

The pink or white jig and the olive or brown wholly bugger still seem to be the
favorite flies for many people up and down the river. Reports have been noted
that the copper zebra midge and the copper john have been and still are catching
many trout.

In the afternoons, when the water is low night crawlers seem to do very well.
Yellow powerbait are also very effective. As many of us know, rainbows are very
aggressive when it comes to bait fishing. Although when you use live bait, the
browns will also become aggressive because it’s a natural food source for
them.
The favorite lures that guides have been using lately have been brown, black,
pink or white jigs on two or more units of water. Some other lures being used
are the # 5 silver or gold floating rapalas and the smithwick blue-backed rogue.
Any minnow shaped lure has potential such as excalibers and lucky craft.
Please
note that a trophy trout released can be replicated if you have the dimensions
and pictures of the fish so that one day someone else can experience a great
trophy trout as well.
When the weather
starts getting cooler, look for the silver or white colors to start working.
It
is rewarding to see the bait fisherman, fly fisherman, guides, operators and the
public working together in the best interest of the White River and it's Trophy
Trout fishing program. Just proves what a bit of teamwork will do.

NO CLOSED SEASON
Fishing the White River is allowed 12 months out of
the year. The months of November through March offer some of the
trophy trout
catches of all seasons, however, fishing is good all year as the water temperature remains
an approximate 50 degrees throughout the year.

Steamed Trout With
Clam Sauce
Serves 4
Ingredients
4 trout filets
Clam Sauce
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons butter
1.5 cups clam juice
1/4 cup soy sauce
water
Directions
Cook the cornstarch
(moistened with water) and butter together to make a roux. Gradually add the
clam juice and soy sauce, stirring continually.
Use trout, filets or steaks which have been wiped with a damp cloth.
Rub with a clove of
garlic and a bay leaf.
Place the fish on a
wire rack over a pan of water, cover the pan and steam 10-11 minutes. Serve with
sauce.

Pointers For
Catch-n-Release
Choosing Your Tackle
Use strong line to bring your catch in quickly.
Fish caught with flies or lures survive at a higher rate than fish caught with bait.
Use hooks appropriate to the size of the fish.
Use pliers to pinch barbs on hooks down.
Landing Your Catch
Land your fish as carefully and quickly as possible.
Avoid removing the fish from the water.
Do not let fish flop about in shallow water, on the ground, or in the bottom of your boat.
Use landing nets made with soft or knotless mesh.
Handling Your Catch
Keep your fish in the water.
Cradle large fish gently with both hands: one under its belly, one at the tail.
Keep your fingers out of and away from the gills and eyes.
Use wet hands or wet cloth gloves to handle the fish.
Never squeeze the fish.
Support your fish in the water while your partner takes your picture. Fish can not remain healthy out of water for longer than you can hold your breath.
Removing Your Hook
Use long nose pliers to back the hook out.
Remove the hook quickly, keeping the fish underwater.
When the fish is hooked deeply, cut the line to release the fish. If the fish is bleeding form the gills, it is likely to die and you should keep it as part of your bag limit.
Use steel hooks that will rust out, avoid stainless steel hooks.
Reviving Your Catch
Keep your catch in the water at all times. If you want to take a photograph, have the photographer get ready, then lift the fish barely out of the water (unless prohibited by regulation e.g. king salmon in Cook Inlet) and quickly return it to the water.
Point your catch into a slow current, or gently move it back and forth until its gills are working properly and it maintains its balance. When the fish recovers and attempts to swim away, let it swim from your hands.
Large fish may take some time to revive.
